About Paulette-Marie Sauvé, m.f.a., multidisciplinary artist, writer, tapestry designer and weaver
Born in North Bay, Ontario, Canada, Sauvé was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1992, at the Université du Québec in Montreal (UQAM).
In the 1970s, she studied at the Institut des Arts appliqués in Montreal, and in 1974 was awarded a government sponsored trip to France that included visits to tapestry studios and meeting specialists in ancient dyes, notably at the Manufacture des Gobelins in Paris. This inspired her to weave on a high-warp Gobelins style loom, and also to write two books, one about the art of creating with natural dyes and the other about spinning a variety of fibers, both published in 1977.
Sauvé has received grants from the Canada Arts Council, and from the Quebec Minister of Cultural Affairs. In 1978, 1979 and 1984 her work was shown at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Montreal. She founded Atelier Artweave, exhibits her artworks and gives seminars, lectures and workshops in several countries. She also creates commissioned tapestries and paintings, and her work is found in private and corporate collections.
In 1984, Sauvé was commissioned to weave a tapestry triptych measuring more than 400 square feet for Cadillac Fairview in Toronto, Canada. In 2021 the Museum of Fine Crafts of Quebec in Montreal (MUMAQ) held a one-woman solo show celebrating more than 45 years of Sauvé’s tapestries. MUMAQ also created a virtual visit of her entire exhibition which is shown on their website, and they created 3 videos of interviews about her work. In 2023, the Museum of Fine Arts in Sherbrooke Quebec (MBAS) held a solo show celebrating 50 years of Sauvé’s tapestries. A video was filmed with the museum’s conservator giving a guided tour of Sauvé’s exhibition.
